The Ample Oak If this tree is on the 1991 list I don't know which it is so I have named it myself. The name was chosen because to my eye the tree has a number of breast like swellings. Unlike many it can be photographed even when the surrounding trees are in full leaf, well worth visiting. Scots Pine are being vilified by the National Trust who lump them in with Rhododendron and Himalayan Balsam as invasive aliens. I think this makes it easier to motivate volunteers to pull Scots Pine seedlings and 'bash' young trees. There is no doubt SPs do seed freely and they germinate well in the margins of our drying mires creating a lot of work in keeping them under control. I don't see this as justification for an extermination campaign. Surely the efforts should be made to keep the mires wet and hostile to Pine establishment.....and there are natural sustainable volunteers keen to do the job - Beavers.
